Bicentenary of birth of Fryderyk Chopin and Robert Schumann

Vatican post will issue a set of postage stamp dedicated to two great composers Fryderyk Chopin and Robert Schumann on the Bicentenary of their birthday.

Fryderyk Franciszek Chopin was born on 1 March 1810 in a family which had a passion for music. He began his study of music at a very young age and gave his first public performance already at the age of 8. Although he was closely tied to his beloved homeland of Poland, he moved to Paris when he was 20 and never returned home again. His splendid compositions, including mazurkas, polonaises and nocturnes, clearly show the influence of the folk music of Poland where he is celebrated as a true national hero. He is considered the greatest Polish composer of all time and known throughout the world as the poet of the piano.

Robert Alexander Schumannwas born in Zwickau, Germany, on 8 June 1810. He is unanimously considered to be one of the most brilliant composers of Romanticism. Schumann had a very short and difficult life. While still young, he lost the use of the fourth finger in his right hand and was forced to interrupt his piano career. He then focused on composing music, which came to express his deep passion and restlessness. Apart from his many compositions for orchestra, Schumann is especially known for his piano works with which he reached the highest point of his artistic maturity. The German composer is said to have had flattering words for his Polish contemporary: “You can recognize Chopin even in the moments of silence”.
