Neil Armstrong letter and First Day Cover deliver $13,000

A very rare signed letter from the first moonwalker from the Apollo 11 has sold:- This week, RR Auction held an auction of fine and collectible autographs.

The Space and Aviation section of the sale held an impressive 90 lots, including some very desirable items for a Space enthusiast.

These included a signed book, Project Mercury. In December 1960, the Mercury 7 crew (autographed the book for the benefit of Marion Smith. The book sold for $4,506. Collectors interested in the Mercury 7 may wish to know that a photo of them, signed by them is currently available.

There was no question about the top lot for the section, however. That was a letter from Neil Armstrong, handwritten and signed simply 'Neil'. It reads:

"Here is the cover you missed. It was a gift from the famous southern solon Mendel Rivers. I had the crew autograph it. Sorry we didn't have more time in Wapakoneta but we certainly enjoyed seeing you. Our best to your family"

The cover referred to in the letter features images of Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins, with an a12 First Man on the Moon 10-cent stamp affixed, doubly cancelled "Moon Landing, USA, Jul 20 1969," and "Washington, DC, Sep 9 1969".

The valuable piece sold for $13,015. Collectors who missed it may be interested to know that some of Neil Armstrong's hair is currently on the market.
