EXPO 2010 Shanghai – Liechtenstein

From 1st May to 31st October the eastern Chinese metropolis of Shanghai will be host to the world when the People’s Republic of China invites visitors to EXPO 2010 under the title “Better city, better life”.

Liechtenstein, which will be participating again in a world exposition for the first time since Hanover 2000, has as one of the smallest of the 227 participating countries chosen the subtheme “Dialogue and Respect” for its contribution. The exhibition plan provides for two pavilions: a two-storey building on the EXPO Site (area: 324 m²) with both public and guest sections and a somewhat smaller one in the centre of Vaduz, in which all those who cannot travel to Shanghai will be able to experience the EXPO by means of a virtual visit.

This souvenir sheet presents firstly an “Atmospheric View of Vaduz” (face value CHF 1.60) painted by Johann Jakob Schmidt (1804–1844) and dating from 1833, and secondly the picture “Tidal bore on the Qiantang river” (face value CHF 1.90) by the Chinese painter and poet Xu Gu (1824–1896), which was painted at about the same time. In addition to the normally perforated souvenir sheet an imperforate variant will be issued between 1st May and 31st October 2010 while EXPO 2010 is in progress.
