Rare 1857 Newfoundland stamp cover leads Virginia auction

It will appear alongside two singles from special printings 1879-80 and a spectacular multiple

In two weeks' time, Regency Superior is holding another of its auctions - this time exclusively focusing on rare stamps, with none of the sports or space memorabilia which has supported its previous sales involved.

The key lot is likely to be a folded cover which contained a letter to Boston, sent from Newfoundland way back in 1857. Sporting a strip of four 1d brown- violet crown stamps, and a rare light red 1857 Newfoundland postmark at its centre, it is one of just two known of its kind.

The stamps have large to just touching margins on the top right and there is a small tear on the leftmost stamp. Overall the piece would be an excellent centrepiece for a collection, and is expected to bring at least $25,000.

The sale also offers extra chances to buy 1880 special printing 1879 Jefferson 10¢ deep brown unused single with rich colour and an 1880 special printing 1879 Perry 90¢ dull carmine to which the same description applies.

With a doubt, the most interesting multiple in the sale is a spectacular 15 block of the Washington 10c yellow-green F-Grill - the largest multiple of the stamp known to exist, and once a cherished part of the collection of Jefferson Jones.

The block as a whole has fresh, attractive colour, despite darkening on the top right, and to a greater extent bottom left stamp, which is in general flawed. The centring overall is average. Nevertheless, it is hardly overestimated at the listing of $25,000, and might make a worthy investment for a keen collector.
