Philatelists Have ‘Phun’

The Strait Stamp Society’s 15th Annual Stamp Show on Aug. 7 in Sequim had more than 100 attendees, including 11 members of a Victoria, British Columbia, stamp club. Seven dealers participated.


Dawson Marunde, 11, won the “Most Unusual” award with his exhibit on the Pony Express, (1860-1861) He had created a mochila, a mail carrying saddle bag, and the photo shows a facsimile of an actual cover.


At center, Rex “Jim” Bates earned “Most Attractive” honors with his display titled “Scenic America” with stamps depicting the nation’s beauty, including the first U.S. stamps to have scenery as the subject matter.


Chester Masters received the “Most Educational” award with his paneled exhibit on mail service of Clallam County. He had many rare covers from all over the county from places that don’t exist or have a post office anymore, including Port Williams and Dungeness.
