To commemorate the victory of Pakistan Hockey Team in the World Cup Hockey Tournament, Barcelona (Spain) on 24.10.1971, the Pakistan Post Office is issuing a postage stamp of 20-Paisa denomination on 31.12.1971.
Pakistan Hockey Team has won the following events in succession
World Olympics Mexico—1968;
Asian Games, Bangkok, 1970,;
First World Cup Tournament at Barcelona (Spain), 1971.
Pakistan Hockey Team has thus reached the pinnacles of glory and are now the World Hockey Champions. The performance of the Pakistan Hockey Team has throughout been of the highest order: the individual players having been endowed with excellent basic skills. By virtue of their magnificent victory over Spain in the Barcelona Tournament, the Pakistan Hockey Team has brought back the beautiful cup donated by their own Federation.
Ever since Independence, Pakistan Hockey team has had a checkered history. They lost in the London Olympics (1948) and the Helsinki Olympics (1952) but reached the —finals in the Melbourne Olympics (1956)~ they won the Gold Medal in the Asian Games at Tokyo and became Hockey Champions in Rome Olympics (1960). In 1962, Pakistan successfully defended the Asian title by defeating India but suffered setback in Tokyo Olympics (1964) and, again, lost the Asian title in 1966. In the International Hockey Festival held in Lahore in 1968, however, Pakistan finished on top and won the World Olympics in Mexico City (1968), also winning the Asian Games at Bangkok (1970) and the First World Cup Tournament at Barcelona in 1971.
