Stampless $10,000 letter brings ten-times its estimate at Spink Shreves

Marked 'Navy Department/Texas', this letter from man to wife dated 1838 was a big hit at auction:- An historic stampless cover which sold for ten-times its estimate was among the highlights at Spink Shreves' Collectors Series Sale at the weekend (July 21-23).

Lot #1 in the sale is dated to 1838 and addressed to Mrs Mary Forrest in Baltimore, Maryland, US. In the corner, the envelope is marked "Navy Department/Republic of Texas".

The three-page letter, from Moreau Forrest to his wife, talks about business ventures in Texas, the difficulty of sending US money, as well as personal family issues.

The unstamped, folded letter from 1838

Other features on the cover include a red "SHIP" handstamp. According to Spink Shreves' condition report, there are some splits in the letter, caused by a vertical fold.

Nevertheless, the letter remains a remarkable historic philatelic artefact. It appeared in the auction with a printed transcript of the letter's contents and a pre-sale estimate of just $1,000-1,500.

Attracting spirited bidding, this rare Navy Department/Consulate specimen from the Republic of Texas realised a final price of $10,000 - clearly a great investment for the seller.

Historic stamp from the earliest days of US philately sells for $12,000

Formerly of two legendary collections, this 1847 5 cents Orange Brown starred at David Feldman:- It was originally on July 1, 1845, that rates of postage were established in the United States following an Act of Congress on March 3 of that year.

The basic rate was 5 cents for a single letter under 300 miles (an ounce), which was doubled for distances over 300 miles. The rate was also doubled, trebled, quadrupled and so on in accordance with the number of letters posted.

Although stamps would soon be issued independently by a number of states - following the example of the New York City Dispatch's first-ever US postage stamp of 1842 - its wasn't until March 3, 1847, that another Act of Congress allowed the US Postmaster-General to issue stamps.

It was one of the finest examples of the 1847 5 cents Orange Brown stamp which starred in auction house David Feldman's New York sale of Worldwide & United States Stamps and Covers, last week (July 20).

An 1851 envelope bearing the 1847 5 cents Orange Brown stamp

Boasting full to large margins all around, with traces of the frameline of an adjoining stamp along the top, the historic stamp is affixed to a folded letter datelined Wallington, Connecticut, September 11, 1851, to Columbus Ohio.

The three-year old stamp would have been superseded by other currency by this point, as evidenced by the "5" rate added next to the stamp. According to the condition report, the stamp itself boasts fresh colour on deeply blued paper, and was cancelled with a black grid handstamp.

Billed by David Feldman as "one of the finest known examples," the cover also has provenance to match its history having been formerly part of Ryohei Ishikawa's award winning philatelic collection of foreign mail, from which it was purchased by the renowned collector Joseph Hackmey.

For now, this singular and historic philatelic artefact's story continues in the hand of another collector, who acquired the cover for a final price of $12,000.

Mail Model at New Zealand Art Show

A male mannequin covered in postage stamps is one of about 3500 works by 500 selected artists for sale at the New Zealand Art Show at TSB Bank Arena from Friday to Sunday.

Mail Model, by Paraparaumu artist Rachel Goodman, took about 120 hours and a thousand stamps to complete.

Response to the piece has been mixed. "People either really love it or really hate it," Goodman said. The stamps - some dating back to pre-decimal days - brought back memories for some.

"People will look at a stamp and remember what they were doing or how old they were."

Show director Carla Russell said all art in the show was priced between $100 and $5000, with an average price of $500 to $600.

2010 Year of peace and security in Africa

Algerian post issued a stamp to mark 2010 as Year of peace and security in Africa. With the goal to end the wars that characterized some of the African continent, the African Union has declared the year 2010, the year of peace and security in Africa at the special summit in Tripoli (Libya) August 31, 2008.

The armed conflict every year kill thousands of people, cause humanitarian crises, destroying the country’s resources and impede any sustained economic development. One of the most serious consequences of these conflicts is the loss of hope for a better future.

In order to revive the hope among the peoples of Africa, the Heads of States are determined to put an end to the scourge of conflicts and violence on the continent, driven by the desire to mobilize all means and human resources necessary.

In January 2010, several African countries have received the flame of peace of the African Union, unifying symbol for all nations pledging to promote peace.

The campaign of peace and security in Africa will be crowned Sept. 21, 2010, the International Day of Peace which will be a unique moment of collective union by highlighting the objectives of the Year of Peace and Security and provide a stronger foundation for sustainable peace in Africa. A cease-fire and a cessation of all hostilities must be marked in all African areas of conflict during the day to show that peace was possible in Africa and that life is better without violence or conflict.

However, the initiative to promote peace, security and stability in Africa will not be limited to one day only but it will take several years and it will be an opportunity for African governments and institutions in collaboration with the international community, to celebrate successes and to review current efforts to promote peace in order to strengthen, build an important milestone in launching new initiatives to promote peace and security.

600th Anniversary of the Battle of Grunwald

The Battle of Žalgiris is considered to be one of the most important historical events of Lithuania and one of the largest battles, which took place in the Medieval Europe.

It took place on the 15th of July 1410 between the Teutonic Order and the joint forces of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Kingdom of Poland led by the King of Poland Jogaila and the Grad Duke of Lithuania Vytautas.

Due to the Lithuanian army’s manoeuvre performed by Vytautas, namely false retreat, the Crusaders were surrounded and defeated. The outcome of the battle meant the collapse of the Teutonic Order’s power and the halt in expansion to neighbouring territories.

In the history of Poland, the Battle of Žalgiris is known as the Battle of Grunwald and in Germany and other Western countries it is known as the Battle of Tannenberg.

On 3rd August 2010, Jersey Post will issue the fourth set of stamps in the series entitled 'Vintage Cars'.

The first motor car arrived in Jersey at the end of the nineteenth century and shortly after, in 1908, the 'First Annual Parade' of the Jersey Motor Association took pace.

Vintage car cavalcades are, to this day, a familiar sight in Jersey and, often, the fine old motors are complemented by their drivers in striped blazers, boaters and bonnets and they never fail to turn heads as they motor around the Island.

The stamps feature:

39p - 1912 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost
45p - 1926 Bugatti Type 37
55p - 1933 Austin 7
60p - 1938 Citroen Light 15 Roadster
72p - 1946 Morris 10/4 Saloon
80p - 1949 Rover 75 Sports Saloon

Scouting

The U.S. Postal Service celebrates the adventure and spirit of scouting by issuing a stamp at the Boy Scout’s Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, VA.

To create this original design, illustrator Craig Frazier depicted the images of two different scouts in clothing and accessories that are often part of the outdoor scouting experience—hats, packs, boots, and binoculars. At first glance, one sees the large silhouette of a scout peering through binoculars. Within this figure is another scout perched atop a mountain taking in the vista. “I wanted a level of discovery to be portrayed in the stamp itself,” Frazier recalls.

Revealing the $64,000 unused 'Elephant' design for China's first-ever postal stamp

Four never-used "Elephant" Design Plate proofs of the 5 cash black stamp

Before the Chinese dragon was chosen, a very different animal adorned China's first stamp...

Four very significant elephants will charge across the auction block at Interasia's Hong Kong auctions, this weekend (July 31-August 1) - alongside two of the most important-ever philatelic items from the Chinese Qing Dynasty, and one of the most sought-after stamps in world.

We've already had a preview peak at the latter three items: the 1897 Red Revenue Small 2c, the only recorded multiple example of "the Emerald Lady", and the exceptionally rare and exalted United States Airmail, 1918, 24¢ carmine rose & blue, center inverted - aka "the Inverted Jenny."

You can read about those items in our previous exclusive report. But also appearing in the sale is an historic piece of Chinese philately which is just as noteworthy: four "Elephant" Design Plate proofs of the 5 cash black stamp, estimated at HK$ 400,000-500,000 (US$51,488-64,360).

The Elephant design for the 5 cash stamp was one of several different subjects submitted for the first-ever postage stamp in China, back in 1877-1878. As can be seen in the image, it depicts a ceremonial elephant carrying a pot of growing cycas on its back.

According to lore, these plants characterise perpetual change and constant regeneration - two of the fundamental philosophies of Buddhism. Flying above the elephant are two bats; also important as the Chinese for bat is "fu", the same word as for happiness.

Along the same theme, the sounds for the other symbols in the stamps' design signify "an augury of great happiness equaling Heaven." This "Elephant" design apparently merited serious consideration at the time, and went through five separate design stages.

Yet the elephant idea went unused, and the dragon design was favoured for China's first-ever stamp - which, of course, makes this block of four even more significant. According to Interasia, the stamps boast excellent colour and sharp impressions, on delicate thin native laid paper.

Remarkably, the block of four has retained its overall freshness and is well-centred with intact perforations. In terms of condition, there is a "neat, barely perceptible" diagonal crease which crosses the two lower stamps, and light folding along the stamps' horizontal row of perforations.

Despite these minor signs of wear, the quartet is billed by the auction house as being in a "very fine state of conservation for this rare and elusive essay" - and is sure to be yet another highlight in Interasia's embarrassment of riches, this weekend.

The Parque Nacional de Picos de Europa extends over the autonomous communities of Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León occupying a surface area of 64.660 hectares amongst the eastern, central and western massifs of the Picos de Europa. In the higher summits, Naranjo de Bulnes, Peña Vieja or Torrecerredo at 2.600 m high, only bushes adapted to the cold winter temperatures grow. Lower down, there are meadows and a large variety of trees such as oaks, birches, chestnut trees and beech trees. There are many protected animal species like the Cantabrian brown bear or the Iberian Wolf and the most representative animals are the Cantabrian chamois, foxes and roe deer. It was declared national park in 1995.

The Parque Nacional de Monfragüe is located in the towns of Plasencia and Trujillo (Cáceres) and expands over a surface area of 18.000 hectares. Alongside big and out-jutting rocks, this park is one of the most representative of Mediterranean forest and brushwood. In the shady areas there is a thick scrubland of strawberry tree, laurustinus and heather growing with blockhead trees and Portuguese oaks. In the sunny areas there are Holm oaks, wild olive trees, rosemary, rockrose and peduncle. Habitat in the park includes more than 250 vertebrate species including the black vulture, the Egyptian vulture, the Spanish Imperial eagle, owls and black storks. Amongst the mammals the habitat includes boars, roe deer, deer, lynx, genet cats and wild cats. It was declared national park in 2007.

Between the provinces of Granada and Almería, spreading over more than 70 villages is located the Parque Nacional de Sierra Nevada with a surface area of 93.208 hectares. Due to the height difference between the different areas of the park ranging from 300 m to 3.484 m there is a wide variety of ecosystems in the mountain areas, forest and basins. In the highest levels only species endemic of these mountains can survive and at lower levels bushes of juniper and Spanish broom grow. In the mountain slopes there are oaks, pine trees, beech and juniper trees. The bird habitat includes Spanish imperial eagles, imperial owls and Bonelli’s eagle. Amongst the mammals there are badgers, foxes and wild cats. In the riverbanks there is a wide variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians. It was declared national park in 1999.

Two-of-kind Panama-Pacific stamp set sells for $23,000

It's said only two sets of these Regular issue small die proofs exist - and one's in the Smithsonian:- All philatelists' eyes have been on Spink Shreves' three-day July 2010 Collector's Series Sale this week, which wrapped-up on Friday (July 23).

Among the US sale's highlights was a complete set of three 1c-$5.00 1902-03 Regular issue Panama-Pacific small die proof stamps.

These proofs were prepared in 1915 for display at the Panama-Pacific Exposition (hence the moniker "Panama-Pacific" small die proofs).

It's widely believed that only three-to-five examples of each proof were ever made. However, Spink Shreves' experts claim to known of only two complete sets extant - of which this is one.

The 1915 complete set of three 1c-$5.00 1902-03 Regular
issue Panama-Pacific small die proof stamps

The other set can be found in the Smithsonian collection - although this set is also of remarkable provenance, having formerly belonged to the Kirkpatrick collection.

Each of the three proofs were sold accompanied by a 1985 PF certificate. They boast strong colours, trivial mounting translucencies and were billed as "very fine" in the sale.

In the end, the set of three stamps realised $23,000 - and will prove an exceptionally rare and historic addition to the lucky buyer's collection.

Spink Shreves' sale took place between July 21-23.

Nashville stamp 'of the greatest rarity' auctions at Spink Shreves

With a low estimate of $10,000-15,000, the sale of this historic US postal cover is a must-see:-

Here's a quick reminder to watch this space for forthcoming results on Spink Shreves' July 2010 Collectors Series stamp auction, which wraps up tomorrow (July 23).

Among the hidden gems in the auction is this 5c Violet brown on gray blue ribbed paper, all the way from Nashville, Tennessee.

The cover is billed by Spink Shreves as being of "magnificent quality", and bears an exceptionally fresh horizontal pair of 5c Violet stamps in bright red-brown shade, on strongly blued paper with enormous margins all around.

This exceptional and rare pair is affixed to a spectacular blue cameo illustrated advertising cover of John Morrow and Son, a Nashville merchant which specialised in saddles and coach-ware.

A pair of 5c Violet stamps, affixed to an advertising cover for manufacturers
John Morrow and Son, dated to 1861

The cover was posted to Murfreesboro, North Carolina, as evidenced by the central and unobtrusive strike of a single stamp which reads: "Nashville/Ten./Oct. 17, 1861."

Although part of the addressee's name has been eradicated over time, this historic piece of US philately is still billed as "extremely fine" by Spink Shreves.

Nashville Postmaster provisional covers with this marvelous eye appeal are of the greatest rarity - making its estimated sales price of just $10,000-15,000 all the more remarkable.

A high-end highlight in Spink Shreves' sale is this 1843 10c Black on yellow green
Double Geneva cantonal

Selling with a 1980 PF certificate to verify its quality and authenticity, this cover is a perfect entry-level investment for philatelists with a passion for United States postal history.

Meanwhile, if you're a collector or investor looking for a high-level philatelic investment, Spink Shreve's sale also features a stamp whose historical provenance matches its scarcity: Europe's third oldest postage stamp, the Double Geneva.

Or, if you'd prefer to invest your money in rare and historic Great Britain stamps, there are currently a range of singular specimens also for sale on the collectors' markets.

Why collectible investments today can mean profit tomorrow

When it comes to investment in a recession, there is little to rival collectibles for sheer growth:- According to a new report from the Institute for Fiscal Studies, the wealth of the average Briton has taken quite a hammering in recent years...

And the effects have been even worse for those groups with greater disposable income. Degree educated individuals have reportedly suffered a £17,600 ($26,400) drop in wealth, while citizens aged 55 to 74 endured a drop of £25,000 ($37,500).

On balance, the recession has dealt a blow of £11,300 ($16,950) to the average Briton's wealth.

Downturns in the property and stock markets, along with a fall in the value of defined pension contributions, have had a significant effect on the wealth of UK households.

In 2007, the value of the FTSE 100 was set at around 6700 points. Two years later, it had dropped to just under 4,000. The UK housing market has also experienced problems. In 2007, the average house price was set at £184,070, but today that figure stands at £167,802 - a loss of 8.7%.

But, while traditional asset values have fallen leading to a loss of wealth, it's a very different story in the world of collectible investments. A similar period has seen investors all over the world turning what has been a £11,000 loss for traditionalists into a profit for collectors.

For starters, some of the world's most sought after autographs have seen incredible short term returns.

An Albert Einstein letter dated January 1954, from Einstein to a Dr Oliver Ford in England, sold at Bonham's in October 2009 for £1626 ($2,440).

The famous 'Burns Bible'
The famous "Burns Bible"

Yet just four months later, the same letter reappeared at an online auction with bids reaching £1,810 ($2,716). That's a return of 11% in 16 weeks.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has experienced this phenomenon first hand. After the recent sale of Scottish poet Robbie Burns' Bible for £25,000 ($41,250), international interest around the piece continued resulting in one collector offering us £37,500 ($61,875).

Had the new owner parted with the treasured collectible, he would have seen a profit of over 50% in one week.

Meanwhile, the stamp market has also seen impressive short term gains.

In China, this has led to world record prices. In September 2009, a collector paid £221,110 ($331,671) for one Chinese Red Revenue stamp, only one of 32 left from the 1897.

Yet, just over three months later, another of the Red Revenue stamps sold for £474,400 ($711,600). That is over double the amount paid just four months earlier.

Stamps are also increasing in value at the lower end of the market. Recently, a rare 1d orange-vermilion went up for auction with a £3,500 ($5,250) presale estimate.

The stamp sold for £13,000 ($19,500) - nearly four times the estimated price.

And such value appreciation hasn't been limited to more traditional collectibles either.

A 1960 Green Lantern Comic issue #1 was auctioned in 2003 for £12,650 ($18,975) which was considered an excellent price at the time. This year, the same issue of the comic, sold for £33,250 ($50,787): an increase of 123.9% in seven years.

The world of art and celebrity has also seen high short term profits. In a 2005 Los Angeles auction, one of the Mick Jagger paintings created by Andy Warhol sold for £13,300 ($19,975).

The Andy Warhol painting
of Mick Jagger

Just two years later, the same painting sold at a similar auction for £26,000 ($39,000.)

Elsewhere, a bathrobe, once belonging to Marilyn Monroe was purchased for $6,000 in 1999. Ten years later, at the height of the recession, this same robe sold at auction for $120,000. That equates to an increase in value of 1,900%.

The long term investment potential for collectibles is equally impressive if not better.

In the world of rare collectible stamps, the GB30 Rarities index, which charts the value of the top 30 rare British stamps for investment over the past 40 years, has shown an overall increase of 6,403% in value. This equates to a compound average annual increase of 11% per annum.

More importantly, at the height of the recent recession, the GB30 Rarities index saw an increase of some 38.6% in value from 2007 to 2008, while the following year recorded a further 45.6% growth.

Collectibles, like autographs have seen equally impressive gains. The PFC40 autograph index, which charts the value of the top 40 most sought after celebrity autographs on the market, recorded an average increase of 335.9% over the last ten years. That's an average compound increase of 15.86% per annum.

And luxury collectibles are seeing even better returns than an investment with Warren Buffett. According to figures, if you had invested in Buffett's famous Berkshire Hathaway Group over the last 20 years you'd have seen returns of 18.83% per annum.

In comparison, in 1986, one avid collector bought Andy Warhol's 200 One Dollar Bills for £256,600 ($385,000). Earlier this year, the same painting was sold for £29,200,000 ($43,800,000) at auction in New York. That's a return of almost 23% per annum.

Ultimately, the recession dealt a £11,300 blow to Britons because their wealth was directly correlated to the traditional investment markets of shares and property.

But unique collectible values hold little correlation with other traditional financial investments. Furthermore, they are tangible: you can hold them, and they will always hold value.

With an estimated 200 million serious collectors worldwide underpinning the market, and early projections forecasting this consumer base to double in the next twenty years, the future looks good for investment grade collectibles.

'Owning the $2.9m Inverted Jenny stamp is, like, 'Whoopee' - but this is... different'

Multi-million stamps are no match for owning original Disney art, says collector Kerby Confer:- Paintings by Carl Barks, longtime Disney artist and creator of the character Uncle Scrooge, have long been among the most sought-after comic art items. Few have been offered for public sale, and those that have were almost always saddled with a six-figure reserve price.

On Friday August 6, however, Heritage Auctions will be auctioning 10 original Barks paintings without reserves in a special session devoted to the collection of Maryland radio executive, Kerby Confer.

"It's been common knowledge in the hobby for years that Kerby Confer owned most of the best Barks paintings, which is why they've been off the market so long," said Barry Sandoval, Director of Operations of the Comics category at Heritage.

Though his name never appeared in a Disney comic, Barks wrote and drew Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge in some of the bestselling comics of the 1950s and 1960s.

Carl Barks wrote and drew Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge in some of the
bestselling comics of the 1950s and 1960s

His rollicking adventure tales have been cited as an inspiration by the likes of George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and mystery writer Janet Evanovich.

As Leonard Maltin once wrote in the Disney News, "… the most popular and widely read artist-writer in the world - by at least one educated estimate - is a man whom most people have never heard of: Carl Barks."

The lavish oil paintings feature Scrooge Middeck, the wealthy miser who loves to swim in his enormous money bin.

They began setting comic art auction records when the first were sold in the 1970s. Barks died in 2000.

Confer discovered Uncle Scrooge as an 8 year-old in Williamsport, PA, at a time when he was lucky if he even had a quarter in his pocket.

"We weren't dirt poor," he said, "but Daddy was gone, Momma worked at the paper plate factory and I had two little sisters."

He recalls opening his first Uncle Scrooge comic: "The very first panel is Scrooge diving off the diving board into the money," he said, "and the next panel he's burrowing through it like a gopher… I was totally captivated!"

Confer previously made international news in the collecting world when his
block of four "Inverted Jenny" stamps was sold in 2005 for $2.9 million

Years later, Confer's successful career as an owner and operator of radio stations gave him the means to acquire elite pieces, and when he happened to see a print of the Carl Barks painting An Embarrassment of Riches - one of the oil paintings in this auction - pictured in a catalog, his collecting quest began.

Confer previously made international news in the collecting world when his block of four "Inverted Jenny" stamps was sold in 2005 for $2.9 million. He says he has a much stronger emotional connection to the Barks art, however.

"The joy of owning the Inverted Jenny when you put it in a safe deposit box and it sits there for years, it's like 'whoopee,'" he said, "but when you walk into a room and you see Scrooge McDuck diving off a diving board into his money and you get a giggle, I just can't describe what the difference is."

Meanwhile, if you're keen to discover what that 'difference' is, a rare and historic signed Walt Disney photograph is currently on the market and for sale to collectors.

Pope Benedict XVI UK Visit Miniature Sheet

Isle of Man is issuing a two-stamp miniature sheet with label to commemorate the beatification of Cardinal Newman and the first papal visit to Britain since May 1982, when Pope John Paul II's six-day tour drew huge crowds.

The second set of the Royal Mail's London 2012 Olympics and Paralympic Games stamps feature work by ten different illustrators across ten stamps.

Marking two years until the opening ceremony, the latest batch will go on sale on 27 July. Each stamp depicts one of 29 Olympic and Paralympic sports. This new set follows an initial set of ten, and a third and final set will be issued in 2011.

A Royal Mail design team, headed by David Hillman from Studio David Hillman, approached the 30 designers, allocating a sport to each for the three-year project. Athletics is to be illustrated by two different illustrators in separate track and field stamps.

The stamps include a collage illustration by Marian Hill, which represents Paralympic rowing. Hillman's own illustration shows a bullet-ridden shooting target, a pentathlon montage has been illustrated by Katherine Baxter, and Matthew Dennis has captured a BMX race.

The Royal Mail claims to have consulted the sports' governing bodies and specialist clubs for each stamp, and the three sets have been organised to balance team and individual Olympic and Paralympic events.

Stamp commemorating 400 year from the date of death of Caravaggio

Italian Post has issued a stamp dedicated to the great Italian artist Caravaggio.

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (29 September 1571 – 18 July 1610) was an Italian artist active in Rome, Naples, Malta, and Sicily between 1593 and 1610. His intensely emotional realism and dramatic use of lighting had a formative influence on the Baroque school of painting. Trained in Milan, Caravaggio moved to Rome in his early 20s, where he filled with paintings numerals churches and palazzo.

Caravaggio's novelty was a radical naturalism which combined close physical observation with a dramatic, even theatrical, use of chiaroscuro that came to be known as Tenebrism, the shift from light to dark with little intermediate value. He burst upon the Rome art scene in 1600 with the success of his first public commissions, the Martyrdom of Saint Matthew and Calling of Saint Matthew. Thereafter he never lacked for commissions or patrons, yet he handled his success atrociously.

However, famous while he lived, Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered.

Dominican Republic: New stamp on 'Preserve Polar Regions and Glaciers' theme

On the occasion of visiting Dominican Republic by Mr. Edouard Dayan, General Director of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) and Mrs. Serrana Bassini, Secretary General of the Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal (PUAEP), the Dominican Post jointly with the Official Philatelic Committee have issued a postage stamp calling attention to the preservation of glaciers and poles, answering on the UPU's invitation to all governments for inclusion in their annual program of an issue with this theme. By the way, Post Offices of many countries took this initiative to participate in the Postal series called International Polar Year.

Every year the consequences of the influence of human actions on the planet take turn to the worse, and specifically those that affect the temperature rising, because of the effect of gaseous pollutants such as CO2. The global warming would have serious effects on the planet if the great powers in general and any citizen of the world particularly wouldn't bring their bit to the arrest or elimination of this problem.

Measures such as limiting car use, reducing fuel consumption, buying more efficient appliances, turning off light bulbs are health measures that everyone can apply.

Gates of Bab al Bahr Asilah – Morocco

Morocco post issued a postage stamp depicting the gate Bab Al Bahr Asilah. The Kings of Morocco gave more importance to the construction of gates and walls of protection in urban localities, not only for defense but also to mark its appearance in civilizational heritage and economic development. According to the customs, names assigned to the gates of ancient cities were inspired by the names of regions to which these doors lead, as is the case of Bab Al Bahr Asilah.

This gate is located in north-west of the city under the Tower of Honor or Alkamar the Portuguese name meaning CAMARA room. This is also known in Portuguese as “Porta Da Riviera, provides access to the sea and ancient port with coffee or coffee Zrireq intellectuals, the name given by the inhabitants of Asilah because coffee is the favorite destination of many artists, poets, writers such as AL Malih Edmon Imran and others. During the occupation of Asilah by Portuguese August 24, 1471 to 13 Septembre1578 – after the battle of Wadi Al Makhazine – Bab Al Bahr played a defensive role and commercial importance. Thus, and given the offensive instantaneous Moroccan Portugal during the reign of King Don Manuel has decided in 1505 to strengthen the doors of Bab Al Bahr Asilah including all under the direction of the engineer Francisco Di The Ansa together skilled workers, whose number exceeded 800 specialists.

The strategic policy of this building is to minimize the surface area of the city and retreat back towards the sea to find an easy exit in case of need and necessity on the one hand, and secondly to facilitate control of ships bound for the Mediterranean or the Atlantic and also protect the Portuguese trade. To strengthen this architecture, manufacturers have imported the decorated rocks from Portugal, the solid stone, lime and other materials in the region of Asilah (Arbaa Ayacha, Beni Arouss, Tendafil, Beni Muslim, Rhouna, Beni Malek .. ..)

    Musical Instruments – The Horn

Spanish post issued a stamp devoted to the horn, a wind-brass instrument belonging to the family of the aerophones. The stamp depicts a horn belonging to the Museo Interactivo de la Música de Málaga.

The horn is a circular shaped instrument with a 35cm diameter. Horns have a mouthpiece and valves in the upper part and a conical bore that gradually becomes wider. The three or four valves, usually rotary, are operated with the left hand, to route the air into extra tubing to change the pitch. In its central part, there are also additional screws.

The sound of the horn is produced by the vibration of the lips in the mouthpiece and by blowing air into the instrument. More lip tension and faster air produces higher notes. It is a prominent solo instrument in European and American symphonic orchestras and in most of them there is a horn section with four or more players. The horn is also played in bands and chamber music and is a standard member of the wind and brass quintets.

Horns were first used in hunting and warfare and it wasn’t until late 17th century when they were introduced in court and royal horse hunts. Around 1815 the use of pistons (which go up and down when pushed controlling the flow of air) was introduced and opened up a great deal more flexibility in playing in different keys. The horn is an instrument with a very rich and expressive sound and a wide range of notes resulting in a mellow or a harsher pitch.

The horn depicted in the stamp is a 20th century piece belonging to the musical instrument collection of the Museo Interactivo de la Música de Málaga (MIMMA).

Sunday Funnies Comic Strips Debut on Stamps

The U.S. Postal Service celebrated five newspaper comic strips by dedicating the Sunday Funnies stamps today. The 44-cent First-Class stamps honor comic strips: Archie, Beetle Bailey, Dennis the Menace, Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes. The strips, as well as their characters, may have changed over the years, yet each remains an enduring classic.

"Like stamps, comic strips often tell a story through humor, adventure, fantasy and sometimes even drama,” said U.S. Postal Service Eastern Area Vice President Megan Brennan. “Today, we are gathered to commemorate five of our country's most beloved comic strips and dedicate an amazing stamp pane that represents a unique part of American culture."

£7,500 for a letter tracking Scott & Shackleton's Antarctic expedition

A letter and cover marking the expedition which launched the British explorers' careers has sold:- Spink held an auction of 1,550 stamps and other philatelic lots ending Thursday, July 15 under the straightforward title of Summer Collectors Series.

The top lot proved to be a British 1840-2000 mint and used stamp collection housed in three printed albums which included 1840 Penny Blacks and Twopenny Blues, various 19th century crowns and commemorative sets up until the present date.

Estimated at £6,000-8,000, the lot excited bidders and sold for £12,500 inclusive of buyer's premium. Philatelists and collectors may wish to take a look at some other rare and valuable Great British stamps which are also on the market.

The lot with broadest appeal, however, was probably a 1904 (16 July) Discovery crested envelope containing a letter from Dr. Reginald Koettlitz at the Falkland Islands to his brother in Dover.

    Antarctic Cover

This long letter begins with his thoughts on the news that that Discovery is being delayed and goes on to explain the overhaul and refitting that was required in New Zealand. It also includes a map.

The British National Antarctic expedition launched the careers of several Antarctic explorers including both Robert Scott and Ernest Shackleton. The cover displays a 2d green marginal pair with fine double-ring. The pair is in beautiful condition.

Its £2,500-3,000 listing always seemed a little modest, and a keen bidding battle saw it finally sold for £7,500.

Collectors interested in heroic explorers may be interested to know that a photograph signed by Mount Everest's conquerer Edmund Hillary is currently on the market.
