Stamps mark two railway centenaries

Not just one, but two illustrious Swiss railway lines are celebrating their 100-year milestone in 2010 – the Niesen funicular and the Rhaetian Railway Bernina line. Swiss Post is issuing two stamps to commemorate each centenary.

Since 1910, a funicular has been operating between Mulenen and the summit of the Niesen, high above Lake Thun. It is a unique railway, covering 3.5 kilometres and climbing over 1,600 metres. The gradient on the steepest section is an impressive 68 percent. To reflect the enormous height gain, the Niesen funicular special stamp is being printed in portrait format.

The Bernina line, too, is a Swiss jewel, linking St.Moritz with Tirano in Italy. The route passes through three language regions as well as vastly different climates, ranging from snow and glaciers to palm trees. In 2008, the Bernina line and its sister the Albula line became UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Postage stamps to cost 60c

Australia Post will increase the costs of postage stamps to 60 cents, with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) not objecting to the increase.

Australia Post had previously tried to increase postage stamp costs from the current 55 cents to 60 cents last year, but was rejected by the ACCC with concerns that Australia post had not proven its case and that costs should have dropped due to the GFC. Australia Post then made another attempt to increase prices in April, which initially was 'concerning' for the ACCC, but after review Australia Posts' case has passed the ACCC's scrutiny and 60 cent stamps will come into effect from the 28th of June this year applying to Small, Large and PreSort letter services..

The ACCC has statutory powers to assess proposed Australia Post price increases in areas where it has a monopoly: mail collection, mail distribution and the issue of postage stamps.

Europa postage stamps from Slovenia

Slovenian Post is issuing two stamps based on the theme of Children's Books, the topic for this year's Europa series.

The stamps were designed and illustrated by Matjaz Ucakar.

Four postage stamps to celebrate Eurovision 2010

This year's stamps in the Norwegian Popular Music series are devoted to the Eurovision Song Contest, held in Oslo between 25 and 29 May.

The stamps feature the three Norwegian winning acts - Bobbysocks (1985), Secret Garden (1995), Alexander Rybak (2009) and Jahn Teigen. The latter was selected through a public vote.

This release not only marks the Eurovision Song Contest in Oslo, but also the 50th anniversary of the Norwegian national selections, better known as Melodi Grand Prix.

The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the longest running television programmes in the world and recent years' audience figures have been around 100 million.

One of Europe's oldest stamps priced at $129,000 in 'sale of the Century'

Here is your once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to buy one of the great Zurich rarities of Swiss philately:- While the stock markets remain uncertain, stamps are increasingly proving themselves as safe and long term alternative investments.

Several billion dollars are exchanged for stamps every year throughout the world, according to market estimates, while price curves for stamps are rising sharply.

This is largely because only a few stamps from the 19th century have survived in a quality sufficient for trading and investment.

With this in mind, Peter Rapp AG's June 1-4 stamp auction is being billed as "the sale of the century" by Forbes and other sources - and a number of record-breaking sales are anticipated.

This particularly applies to the lost "Ticino" stamp collection, a formerly missing assortment which dates back more than 100 years...

The Ticino stamp collection

The near-mythical collection comprises some of the most valuable philatelic specimens in history, and remains one of the most legendary stamp collections from the period 1843-1854.

Peter Rapp is billing the collection's sale as a "once in a century event," and predicts that it will sell for more than 13m Swiss francs (just over $11m).

Investors and collectors from more than 24 countries are expected to participate, with another several thousand joining in by telephone or online.

Among the lots already causing a sensation among global experts is the collection's centrepiece: a fantastically beautiful cover bearing three "Neuenburg" stamps, dating back to 1852.

It's thought that this cover alone will realise more than a quarter of a million francs (or over $232,000). It was last sold in New York back in 1956.

The three-of-a-kind Zurich four rappen (4 cent) cover

The Ticino collection also includes several spectacular Swiss postal history covers, each expected to achieve more than 150,000 francs (almost $129,000) at auction.

The Zurich 4s and 6s

Among these is a highly coveted Zurich cover from 1849 (pictured above). Zurich was the first canton of Switzerland to issue adhesive stamps only months after Great Britain issued the world's first, the Penny Black.

Zurich would become Europe's second postal authority to issue adhesive postage stamps on March 1, 1843. Initially, two valued stamps were issued, the four rappen and the six rappen (4 and 6 cents).

The designs were produced by a lithographer named Esslinger, based in Zurich. In order to produce the stamps in sheets of 100, Esslinger multiple-copied rows of five hand-drawn stamps.

Because the initial five hand-drawn differed slightly, they became known as "Types".

Peter Rapp's 1849 Zurich example features two Zurich 4 cents stamps, a Type III and Type IV, the latter of which has been bisected in half from top to bottom.

The letter is addressed to the mayor's office in Wettschweil, with the address tied with a datestamp, "ZURICH NACHMITTAG," "25 SEPT 1849".

The only known cover to bear a rosette hand stamp, along with a whole and half 4 cent stamp, was posted only a month prior to the introduction on new Swiss federal tariffs in October 1849.

Of only three such examples are known to exist this, according to Peter Rapp, "by far" surpasses the other two letters in terms of quality.

This 1849 cover will go under the hammer with an estimate of 100,000-150,000 Swiss francs (roughly $86,000- 129,000).

It is selling with certificates from Cueni (1947) and Eichele/Marchand (2009) confirming the accurate and excellent preservation of its brands and franking.

While so-called Zurich 4s and 6s are the oldest stamps of the European continent, the second oldest is the Double Geneva, issued by the City of Geneva.

A Double Geneva cover will also appear for sale in Peter Rapp's sale, which we previously reported on here, carrying an estimate of 150,000-200,000 Swiss francs ($139,275-185,700).

Two-of-a-kind Civil War stamp cover could sell for $100,000

One of just two known US Civil War 'mixed frank' Nashville 10c stamps will auction in New York:- A stamp cover which combines the rarest elements of philately and postal history will sell at Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries on May 27.

Siegel is auctioning the Steven C Walske Collection of Civil War Special Routes stamps. Walske is listed by Forbes as Managing Director of the software investments firm Myriad Investments, LLC.

Among the sale's many highlights is one of just two known covers bearing a Nashville 10-cent provisional stamp alongside mixed frankings with US postage.

The cover is a letter posted in 1861 and addressed to Reverend Abner Johnson Leavenworth, then the principal and proprietor of the Leavenworth Academy and Collegiate Seminary for Young Ladies.

The Nashville 10c stamp has two large margins on its left and bottom right, and is tied - or stamped - with a blue "Adams Express Co. Aug. 1" oval datestamp.

The Adams company was assigned to ensure the prepayment of government postage (both Federal and Confederate) during the US Civil War (1861-1865).

It is held among philatelists that very few covers carried across the line by express services were recorded with Confederate provisional stamps or markings - including this example.

The rare Nashville 10-cent cover with mixed frankings and US postage

This cover is one of just three examples recorded with a Nashville 10c adhesive provisional stamp which were carried "across the lines" (between North and South) by Adams.

The letter was franked twice during its journey: in Nashville on August 1, and earlier in Louisville on July 30 (as shown by the circular datestamp which cancels the red 3c embossed stamp at the cover's top right).

Beside the 3c stamp, the letter was marked with a blue "10" hand stamp in Petersburg. This was presumably to indicate that the letter was over the half-ounce weight limit.

According to Siegel, its records contain only six genuine covers with the Nashville 10c Green provisional, of which only three were tied by August 1.

Of those three, this example is listed by Siegel as having light soiling and edge wear - less so on its top right-hand corner - with a small part of its backflap removed.

The rare and historic cover, dated to the first year of the US Civil War, is appearing for sale at Siegel with an estimate of $75,000-100,000.

Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries is based in New York.

World’s most expensive stamp

The Swedish “Treskilling Yellow” retained its title as the world’s most expensive stamp when it changed hands at a private sale shrouded in secrecy, the auctioneer claimed Saturday.

The one-of-a-kind 1855 misprint was sold to a group of buyers who asked that their identities and the winning bid be kept confidential, said auctioneer David Feldman.

He declined to reveal whether the sale matched the 2.875 million Swiss francs (then about $2.3 million) price it set a record for in 1996.

“It is still worth more than any other single stamp” including the even older “2 Penny Post Office Mauritius Blue” that sold for 1.5 million francs (then $1.4 million) in 1993, said Feldman.

The auction house valued the stamp at euro1.5 million to euro2 million ($1.87 million to $2.5 million) before the sale, but actual sales prices can vary greatly depending on what the buyers feel such unique items are worth.

Feldman told the AP that Saturday’s auction “happened very quickly because the buyers clearly knew how much they were prepared to pay.”

The economic downturn has made people more careful about bidding for such pricey items, he said. At the same time, stamps are increasingly being seen as investment opportunities, he added. “People are looking for investments they can hold in their hands.”

The Treskilling Yellow has changed hands at least once since 1996, but little is known about the last owner except that he or she had to sell the stamp because it had been put up as financial collateral.

The first collector to own the stamp is said to have been a Swedish schoolboy, who found it in 1885 among a pile of letters left by his grandparents. A similar tale is told about the 1 cent Magenta.

Feldman said the Treskilling Yellow was last displayed in public a week ago at the London 2010 Festival of Stamps.

World's most expensive stamp sold in Geneva

The world's most expensive postage stamp, a one-of-its-kind issue printed in Sweden in 1857, was sold at auction in Geneva to an international consortium, auctioneers said.

One of the rarest known stamps, the "Treskilling Yellow" - or three-shilling stamp - was issued by mistake during a print run of eight-skilling stamps, which are yellow. The three-skilling was normally green.

A Swedish schoolboy stumbled upon it in 1885 while rummaging for stamps to sell on for pocket money. Since then it has passed through the hands of a series of stamp collectors, as well a German aristocrat and a Belgian tycoon.

The last time it was sold, in 1996, it fetched USD 4.5 million dollars at auction.

Stamp auctioneers David Feldman yesterday did not disclose the identity of the buyers, nor the price paid this time round.

They did say however that the stamp remained the world's most expensive.

"The consortium members bought the stamp after deeming that it was a solid investment in these times of crisis," they added in a statement.

As the rest of the Canary Islands, La Gomera has volcanic origins and thus the characteristic rocks that are found along the island. These are former volcanoes whose shape has been sharpened by erosion. The park provides the best example of laurisilva, a humid subtropical forest with many species of evergreen leaves that need a high level of humidity. More than 50 species of endemic flora can be found in the island the most common being the laurisilva, beech and heather. With regards to the Fauna, there are over 150 autochthonous species such as the Laurel Pigeon, the owl, hoopoe, sparrowhawk and kestrel. It has been declared National Park in 1981, World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986 and Special Protection Area for Birds and Site of Community Importance.

The Nature Reserve of Doñana is located in Andalusia, in the provinces of Huelva, Seville and Cádiz. It is made up of the National Park of Doñana and the Natural Park of Doñana set within the boundaries of the former. It is named after Ana de Silva, daughter of the duque of Medinasidonia. Due to its geographic location between Europe and Africa, the Atlantic and Mediterranean, it shelters many migratory birds. The park is an area of marsh, shallow streams, and sand dunes along the coast. Amongst the protected species are the Golden Eagle and Iberian Lynx. It shelters more than 200 bird species, mammals, fish, amphibians and reptiles. It was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994.

Marine animals joint issue with Canada

Swedish post Jointly with Canada issued a set of stamps featuring four marine animals. The Blue Whale – probably the biggest animal ever to live on Earth – is by far the largest of the animals depicted, and the Sea Otter the smallest. The other animals are a Ringed Seal and a Harbor Porpoise.

The enormous Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) rolls its long, powerful body majestically through the water. The blue whale is the largest animal on Earth, and with a potential length of over 30 meters it compares to some of the very largest dinosaur species. The blue whale can be found in all the oceans, and as summer approaches it seeks out cooler waters around the Arctic and Antarctic. Despite its size the blue whale can only eat small creatures, its diet of choice being krill, a tiny crustacean.

The Harbor Porpoise (Phoconidae) is also a species of whale, a toothed whale in fact. The flatter teeth and blunt nose distinguish it from the dolphin. The porpoise can be found in all the world’s seas and tends to keep to coastal waters. The fastest porpoise species can swim at over 50 kilometers an hour, although its jump is not as advanced or venturous as the dolphin’s.

The Ringed Seal (Pusa hispida) can be found in the Arctic Ocean, as well as the Baltic. Most of the Baltic ringed seals live in the Gulf of Bothnia, but are becoming increasingly scarce further south due to the mild winters. The Atlantic ringed seal likes to swim along the Canadian coast down towards Newfoundland.

The smallest of the marine animals on the Marine Life stamps is the Sea Otter (Enhydra lutris) with a maximum weight of about 45 kg.The otter has extremely dense fur to counter the cold. There are about 100,000 hairs on one square centimeter of skin, about the same as a human’s head hair. The sea otter is perhaps best known for using tools. To access the contents of clams and other molluscs, the otter lays them on its chest and breaks a hole in the shell using a stone. Smart!

Bird of the Year: Shrike

The Estonian Ornithological Society picked has two species of shrikes, the red-back shrike (Lanius collurio) and the great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor), as birds of the year 2010. The birds have a long tail and a strong hooked beak. The male shrike has a typical black eye mask. The red-back shrike is slightly larger than the sparrow while the great grey shrike is about the size of a small thrush. Shrikes can be seen in open and semi-open landscapes.

Although shrikes are regarded as passerines they can be heard singing very seldom. Shrikes are carnivorous birds whose catch consists of larger insects, lizards, frogs, small birds and rodents. They hunt from prominent perches and impale corpses on thorns or barbed wire as a “larder”. The red-back shrike is a migratory bird that winters in southern Africa and arrives at our latitude only in the middle of May. In Estonia it is a very common breeding bird whose number in the country has been assessed at 40,000 to 60,000 pairs.

The great grey shrike can be seen in Estonia all through the year but it is considerably less numerous than the red-back shrike. About 500-600 great grey shrikes spend the winter here, and only 300-500 pairs of them breed in the country. The great grey shrike and the red-back shrike are in the third category of protected birds.

New stamps honour WWII heroes

A man and his two sisters recreate the moment they fled as child war evacuees as a stamp collection marking the Blitz is launched.

John Dawson, Barbara Southard and Rosemary Brett were photographed in 1941 huddling together at London's King's Cross station before being put on a train.

The children, each wearing an identity tag, had already endured months of the World War II air attack by Hitler's Luftwaffe, which began in 1940.

Protective Barbara, five, is seen putting her arms around John, three, and Rosemary, two - as they waited to be dispatched to the safety of Northampton.

The trio, now 76, 74 and 73, eventually returned safely to their home in Greenwich, South East London, where John still lives. Barbara, now living in nearby Welling, said: "It brought back lots of memories."

The stamp is one of a collection of 12 WWII designs on sale at 60p for a year to mark the 70th anniversary of the Blitz.

One features wartime PM Winston Churchill inspecting troops. In another, the Queen is seen broadcasting to the nation as a young princess watched by her sister Margaret. Another features an air raid warden setting "lights out" time.

Archeological treasure – Ravlica cave

The Ravlica cave in the Pec Mlini, at the source of the river Tihaljina near Drinovci, (western Herzegovina) is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By excavations, which were conducted from 1977. – 1979. at that site, and again from 2008. – 2009., it was determined that the cave served as a living space for a large number of prehistoric communities from the early Neolithic until the middle Bronze Age or during the entire time span from around 5700. BC until around 1500. BC.

During the excavations the numerous remains of ceramic pottery, flint, stone and bone tools were found as well as grindstones for grinding the corns, palettes for grinding the paint used for painting pottery, remains of prehistoric fauna which was grown and hunted by residents of Ravlica cave, and many fireplaces with thick layers of ash and burned wood.

All cultures that are represented in layers of Ravlica cave are expression of autochthon cultural development of communities that lived, from Neolithic until middle Bronze Age, at the wider eastern Adriatic coast and its hinterland.

Among archeological founds discovered during archeological excavations, in particular, stands out ceramic pintadera, cylindrical shape object derived with a plastic spiral motifs, which belongs to Hvar-Lisicici culture from the late Neolithic and it is the only found of that kind from the late Neolithic in the entire area of the eastern Adriatic coast.
