Expo 2010 Shanghai China

New Zealand post will issue a set of stamps Celebrating its participation at ‘Expo 2010 Shanghai China’, it present an exciting collection of stamp products that capture the remarkable similarities between the cultures of New Zealand and China.

Innovative yet elegantly classical, the products complement the Expo and its theme of ‘Better City, Better Life’. The New Zealand pavilion explores the New Zealand lifestyle and the Expo’s theme through ‘Cities of Nature, Living between Land and Sky’.

50c – Pohutukawa and Peony Flowers
The 50-cent stamp features our native pohutukawa alongside peony flowers often seen in Chinese art. Both blossoms are red, a colour of significance in both M?ori and Chinese cultures. Look closely at the stamp and you’ll notice the pohutukawa tree that sits at the end of the rooftop garden and concludes the visitor experience of the New Zealand pavilion. Although the tree is artificial to withstand the Shanghai climate, it’s strong enough to climb, big enough to fit 20 people and includes a New Zealand classic – a tyre swing!

$1.00 – Kaitiaki and Fu Dog
Both the M?ori kaitiaki and China’s Fu Dog have similar roles. Kaitiaki are carers, guardians, protectors and conservers of the sky, sea and land, while pairs of Fu Dogs (also known as guardian lions, lion dogs and temple lions) can be found outside many Chinese homes and businesses, providing powerful protection against bad fortune. Eight kaitiaki, one of which is featured on this stamp, were carved by Lyonel Grant for the New Zealand pavilion, each different from the next. They adorn the railings that zigzag through the garden at the pavilion.

$1.80 – Tane and Pan Gu
According to M?ori legend, ‘Tane’ (the god of the forests and birds) was instrumental in creating the world of light after separating his parents Papat??nuku and Ranginui. In doing so he created light for a better life. Visitors to the New Zealand pavilion pass through the Waharoa (gateway) carving of Tane featured on this stamp and into the dawn of a new day for an average New Zealand family. Designed by Sam Sakaria and sculpted by Winiata Tapsell, it will surely be a hit at the pavilion. The story of how ‘Pan Gu’ created the world by separating the heaven and the earth from chaos is one of many Chinese creation stories. After his death, Pan Gu’s body parts became the earth, the sun, the moon and the clouds.

$2.30 – Auckland and Shanghai
Just as Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand, so is Shanghai the largest city in China (it’s also the largest city in the world, with a population of more than 13 million). Both cities have harbour-side locations, with the shipping trades of the past leading to their growth and development as prime business and tourism locations today. Auckland is known as the ‘City of Sails’, while the symbols of Shanghai’s name translate as ‘up, on, or above’ and ‘sea’.

$2.80 – Heitiki and Cong
Jade (pounamu) is significant in both M?ori and Chinese cultures. Its importance and use by both civilisations date back thousands of years. The similarity is portrayed in this stamp by the heitiki and cong, both jade objects once owned and used by high-ranking ‘aristocrats’. The heitiki is the most precious of M?ori pendants, gifted in recognition of major achievements or deeds performed on behalf of others, while the tubular-shaped cong is a symbol of good luck, traditionally used for religious functions and funerals. This heitiki is on loan from the Otago Museum for display at the New Zealand pavilion.

Stamps mark Canadian navy centennial

Canada Post will issue two stamps May 4 to commemorate the establishment of the Royal Canadian Navy.

The commemorative stamp issue depicts the past and present of Canada's naval service.

"The two stamps were designed as separate artworks, but they appear as one canvas. They share the same painterly sky, marine life and open sea environments. The two ships, though of a different age, appear as part of the same fleet," notes designer Andrew Perro of the Toronto-based firm, Designwerke. "One of Canada's first warships, the HMCS Niobe, sails alongside a modern frigate, the HMCS Halifax - a feature that speaks to the passage of time, capturing the magnitude of this major centennial milestone." The design is complimented by marine inspired colours and crisp typography.

The stamp will be cancelled in Ottawa, home to the Canadian Navy's headquarters.

Rare Barnabas Bates cover quadruples estimate

The early American propaganda cover brought $13,500 in New York

Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries' sale of the Louis Grunin Collection of Illustrated Covers concluded on Tuesday (April 27). The 263 lot sale had a clear - and surprising - top lot: a Barnabas Bates illustrated 'Cheap Inland and Ocean Postage' propaganda cover.

Barnabas Bates (1785-1853) was born in England and came to the United States as a child. He became a Baptist preacher in Rhode Island, where he was also for some time collector of the port of Bristol under President Adams.

Bates became a Unitarian and established in New York in 1825 a weekly paper called the Christian Inquirer.

During the administration of Andrew Jackson he received an appointment in the New York post office and was for some time acting postmaster. He became an advocate for cheap land and ocean postage and lived to see the 3c domestic rate introduced in 1851.

The cover offered showed a beautiful steamship and railroad train, whilst the dull red 3c stamp (Type II) was cancelled with a well-struck Troy NY Jun 27 circular.

The exceptionally fine and rare piece was estimated at $2,000-3,000, but the bidding audience ignored this completely and drove the attractive cover up to a final price of $13,500 - a strong investment for the previous owner.

We will bring you the results of the following Siegel sale, the US Post Office in China, featuring the John Thomas collection, here.

Lawrence of Arabia stamp design to appear at exhibition

The stamps, designed for a short-lived kingdom, were found in the Queen's collection:- Colonel Thomas Edward Lawrence needs little introduction as his life has been well covered in books and film. Later known as Lawrence of Arabia, was particularly known for his role during the Arab revolt against German allies the Ottoman Empire during the First World War.

Whilst Lawrence was famed for his close involvement in the Middle East, one aspect of this is not well known. A set of stamps designed by the British officer has been re-discovered in the Royal collection of stamps.

The sheet of 50 blue stamps was intended for the short-lived Kingdom of Hijaz, and was discovered with a note by Lawrence explaining this. Hijaz was in the eastern region of modern Saudi Arabia, alongside the Red Sea, and lasted from 1916-1924.

Lawrence would have been a natural choice to design stamps for the new kingdomn given his unparalleled understanding of the region. The stamps are straightforwardly patterned, as strict Muslims discourage the use of images of people or other animals for these purposes.

The stamp sheet, originally part of the collection of George V, will form part of the Empire Mail: George V and the GPO exhibition, which Jennifer Flippance talked about in her interview with us. The exhibition takes place at Guildhall Art Gallery from May 7 to July 27.

Two double surcharge stamps could sell for up to $16,500

US Post Office in China Double Surcharge Error ($8,500)

The US Post Office in China error, allowed to sell by a retiring postmaster, heads a New York sale

Following their sale of the The Louis Grunin Collection of Illustrated Covers today, Robert A Siegel Auction Galleries will be having another sale of rare stamps immediately.

Their 173 lot sale of valuable United States Post Offices in China takes place tomorrow, and will feature the collection of John Thomas.

The expected top lots of the sale are two highly desirable examples of the famous $2.00 on $1.00 Offices in China Double Surcharge.

These stamps were the victims of an error which occurred during the overprinting of stamps for use at the US Postal Agency in Shanghai. In the run-up to New Year's Eve 1922 - when the office was scheduled to close - a double surcharge of $2 was applied.

It is believed that the Deputy Postal Agent, Mr E H Murray, knew of the error but allowed it to be put on sale, as he was retiring and the Agency was closing.

The two examples on offer here are singles, though one has been cancelled with a U.S. Pos. Service, Shanghai, China December 23 datestamp (covers are much rarer - only six are known).

The uncancelled example has the fresher paper and better margins (not so slim on the left), and is offered with an estimate of $8,500 whilst the other is expected to sell for $8,000.

The sale takes place tomorrow in New York, though bids can be placed online. With Chinese stamps proving to be an especially strong market this year (with records broken at InterAsia) the auction will be well worth watching, especially for those considering rare stamps as an investment.

Exceptional Swiss 'Neuchâtel' stamps could sell for $232,000

The rare 'Neuchâtel' 1852 cover bearing three cancelled stamps

The most important Swiss stamp collection from 1843-1854 is auctioning for the first time in 50 years...

The Ticino Collection will promise the most outstanding lots at Rapp Auction's forthcoming sale on June 1-4, taking place in Switzerland.

The collection is the most important and valuable selection of Swiss stamps from 1843-1854 to be auctioned in over 50 years.

So exclusive and coveted are its contents that many philatelic insiders were ignorant of the collection's existence. For decades, some of the collection's most precious items even were thought lost.

These 'lost items' include three copies of the so-called "Neuchâtel" stamp. The three stamps will auction at Rapp affixed to a beautiful 1852 cover addressed from Geneva (the second of the Swiss cantons to issue postage stamps) to the Canton of Fribourg.

This cover alone, dated January 1, 1852, is estimated to realise more than a quarter million Swiss Francs (CHF) - or over $232,000.

Bearing three Neuchâtel stamp specimens, all cut very fresh and with wide margins, they have been individually franked with the Neuchâtel brand which is among the greatest postage rarities of Swiss philately.

Often noted in philately textbooks, this letter was regarded as missing for many years. It will appear at auction for the first time in five decades, since the Caspary auction in 1956.

The rare Neuchâtel cover is estimated to sell for $139,275-185,700 (150,000-200,000 CHF) and is one of many absolutely unique and highly-limited stamps to feature in the sale.

Other scarce historic specimens to go under the hammer include one of the best preserved examples of a Double Geneva cover, the third oldest issued European postage stamp.

Regarded as the best example of its kind on the market, the "exceptionally fresh" cover also carries a pre-sale value of $139,275-185,700 (150,000-200,000 CHF).

With such amazing lots on offer, collectors, investors and museum directors from many different countries have indicated buying interest, says Rapp. Many will come in person to attend the auction.

According to industry insiders, demand for rare philatelic collectibles is very strong, with growing interest among investors looking for tangible and potentially recession-proof assets.

Rapp predicts that its sale with net in the region of 15m Swiss Francs, and is confident that it will stand as one of the most spectacular sales of the philatelic auction season.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chunghwa Post will issue a set of four postage stamps and a souvenir sheet, featuring “Shooting An Arrow at the Halberd beside the Gate of the Camp,” “Commenting on Heroes over Wine,” “Zhou Yu’s Anger at Being Tricked by Zhuge Liang Three Times,” and “Holding Meng Huo Captive Seven Times.”

1. Shooting An Arrow at the Halberd beside the Gate of the Camp (NT$3.50)
From Chapter Sixteen. Yuan Shu sent Ji Ling to launch an attack on Liu Bei, who in turn went to Lu Bu for help. Lu came to the rescue and invited both sides to talk peace over a drink. Both Ji and Liu agreed that they would consent to a cease fire if Lu’s arrow could hit the little side prong of the halberd. The arrow hit right on target, thus resolving the crisis.

2. Commenting on Heroes over Wine (NT$3.50)
From Chapter Twenty-One. One day, Cao Cao invited Liu Bei to his house to have a drink and enjoy the plum blossoms. During the drink, Cao talked freely about the state of political affairs. His declaration “Only you and I deserve to be called heroes” demonstrated his great judgment on others and his own ambition. Cao talked without restraint, while Liu felt perturbed and responded with great caution. The story provides a clear glimpse of their temperaments and characters as well as the state of affairs at the time.

3. Zhou Yu’s Anger at Being Tricked by Zhuge Liang Three Times (NT$5.00)
From Chapter Fifty-Six. Lu Su was entrusted with a mission to ask Liu Bei for returning Jingzhou. Zhuge Liang saw through the scheme and prepared appropriately. “It is hard to defeat the enemy when he is too strong and our calculations always come to naught in the end,” Zhou Yu lamented. He would die in remorse, not having fulfilled his expectations.

4. Holding Meng Huo Captive Seven Times (NT$20.00)
From Chapter Eighty-Seven to Ninety. The southern barbarian king Meng Huo led an army to invade Shu. There were constant battles along the border. To find a long-term solution, Zhuge Liang led an army himself on an expedition against Meng Huo. After capturing and releasing Meng seven times, Meng finally surrendered wholeheartedly.

The Faroese Colours

Nature has always occupied a special place in the heart of all-round artist Eli Smith (1955) who began painting with pigments obtained from Faroese localities in 2003. This became a series of pictures painted with pure natural materials such as iron oxide, sand, mussel shells, turf and charcoal. A great deal of experience and inspiration derived from ancient Egyptian tomb paintings and cave paintings in Spain convinced him of the beauty of working in this manner.

When I had put my visitors on shore at the southern tip of the island and begun to sail back to the village where I would collect them later, the motor broke down just opposite the previously mentioned Hósmøl. There I was again in the place with the beautiful colours and, as I couldn’t repair the motor on the spot, I grabbed an oar and paddled to the stony beach. I let down the anchor, went ashore and called for help on my mobile phone. I now had an opportunity to look at the red stone more closely and became so filled with physical well-being at standing alone there and enjoying the peace and all the beauty around me that I said to my God in heaven, “A thousand thanks dear God, you are fantastic.”

Europa 2010 Childrens books – Faroe Islands

A good children’s book is not merely a children’s book, it is just as soon a book for everybody to enjoy, both to look at and to read. Each person gets something out of it, the adult as well as the young reader. There must be room for all age groups.

The same goes for all true works of art – they are timeless and not confined within certain limits, neither time- nor age group-limits. If the work is of good quality, everybody ought to be able to enjoy it.

Two more recent Faroese children’s books ”A dog, a cat and a mouse” and ”Moss Mollis’ journey” are shown on this issue of new Faroese stamps.

In 2004 the book ”A dog, a cat and a mouse” was published which Bárður Oskarsson (born 1972) both wrote and illustrated. The entire story takes place in a house that could be anywhere in the world. All the illustrations are in tawny water colours on which has been drawn with pencil and black ink. This is a classic dog’s-, cat’s- and mouse-story. No wonder that some of the salient characteristics of the modern comic strip-literature has stolen its way into the picture book. The impact from international inspiration is at work.

In 2008 came the book ”Moss Mollis’ journey”. In a short introduction Janus á Húsagarði (born 1975) says the story is about one of the small trolls in the Faroes that can stand the sun, a fact which enables it to travel around the islands at will. In richly water-coloured pictures the small troll Moss Mollis travels around the islands like another Niels Holgarsson, Selma Lagerlöf’s Swedish boy, though not sitting on the back of a goose. The journey commences at the bottom of the ocean where Moss Mollis picks up a pearl from an open horse mussel. With this pearl it travels across the country on the back of a gannet, of a horse, of a whale, of a crow and of a ram until it finds its darling troll who gets the pearl and who sits at his side in the moonlight watching the sea.

On the 23rd and 24th of January 2010, Spink held a magnificent sale of Stamps, Banknotes, Coins and Bonds of Hong Kong and China, at the Landmark Mand

London - Spink is pleased to announce a new world record auction price for a Victoria Cross to a British recipient awarded to Flight Lieutenant W. 'Bill' Reid. The medal group sold this morning for £348,000 to an anonymous bidder in the room. Mark Quayle, medal specialist for Spink commented, “this was a fully justified price reflective of a remarkable act of gallantry.”

The Outstanding Second War Bomber Command Victoria Cross Group of Six to Lancaster Pilot, Flight Lieutenant W. 'Bill' Reid, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, who whilst on a sortie with 61 Squadron to Dusseldorf, 3.11.1943, was 'wounded in two [fighter] attacks, without oxygen, suffering severely from cold, his navigator dead, his wireless operator fatally wounded, his aircraft crippled and defenceless, Flight Lieutenant Reid Showed Superb Courage and Leadership in penetrating a further 200 miles into enemy territory to attack one of the most strongly defended targets in Germany, every additional mile increasing the hazards of the long perilous journey home.' He was later posted to the famous 617 'Dam Busters' Squadron with whom he was 'Bombed-Out' on a 'Tall Boy' sortie over Rilly La Montagne, 31.7.1944, 'just as he emerged, the Lancaster broke in two and Reid tumbled down, accompanied by a hail of metal fragments from his aircraft.' He and his wireless operator survived to be taken prisoner of war, tragically the rest of the crew perished in the crippled plane.

'On the night of November 3rd, 1943, Flight Lieutenant Reid was pilot and captain of a Lancaster aircraft detailed to attack Dusseldorf. Shortly after crossing the Dutch coast, the pilot's windscreen was shattered by fire from a Messerschmitt 110. Owing to a failure in the heating circuit, the rear gunner's hands were too cold for him to open fire immediately or to operate his microphone and so give warning of danger; but after a brief delay he managed to return the Messerschmitt's fire and it was driven off. During the fight with the Messerschmitt, Flight Lieutenant Reid was wounded in the head, shoulders and hands. The elevator trimming tabs of the aircraft were damaged and it became difficult to control. The rear turret, too, was badly damaged and the communications system and compasses were put out of action. Flight Lieutenant Reid ascertained that his crew were unscathed and, saying nothing about his own injuries, he continued his mission. Soon afterwards, the Lancaster was attacked by a Focke Wulf 190. This time, the enemy's fire raked the bomber from stern to stern. The rear gunner replied with his only serviceable gun but the state of his turret made accurate aiming impossible. The navigator was killed and the wireless operator fatally injured. The mid-upper turret was hit and the oxygen system put out of action. Flight Lieutenant Reid was again wounded and the flight engineer, though hit in the forearm, supplied him with oxygen from a portable supply.

Flight Lieutenant Reid refused to be turned from his objective and Dusseldorf was reached some 50 minutes later. He had memorised his course to the target and had continued in such a normal manner that the bomb-aimer, who was cut off by the failure of the communications system, knew nothing of his captain's injuries or of the casualties to his comrades. Photographs show that, when the bombs were released, the aircraft was right over the centre of the target.

Steering by the pole star and the moon, Flight Lieutenant Reid then set course for home. He was growing weak from loss of blood. The emergency oxygen supply had given out. With the windscreen shattered, the cold was intense. He lapsed into semi-consciousness. The flight engineer, with some help from the bomb-aimer, kept the Lancaster in the air despite heavy anti-aircraft fire over the Dutch coast.

The North Sea crossing was accomplished. An airfield was sighted. The captain revived, resumed control and made ready to land. Ground mist partially obscured the runway lights. The captain was also much bothered by the blood from his head wound getting into his eyes. But he made a safe landing although one leg of the damaged undercarriage collapsed when the load came on.

Wounded in two attacks, without oxygen, suffering severely from cold, his navigator dead, his wireless operator fatally wounded, his aircraft crippled and defenceless, Flight Lieutenant Reid showed superb courage and leadership in penetrating a further 200 miles into enemy territory to attack one of the most strongly defended targets in Germany, every additional mile increasing the hazards of the long perilous journey home. His tenacity and devotion to duty were beyond praise.'
